Imagine riding a horse through snow on a warm sunny day in August. This may sound like an impossible contradiction, but I did just that on a high country pack trip with Icicle Outfitters & Guides of Washington State. Icicle Outfitters offers everything from day rides near Leavenworth and at Lake Wenatchee State Park, to drop camps where they pack in gear for hikers or hunters, to full service pack trips. In the winter they even have sleigh rides. M... Read More
One small ship cruise line goes under. Most people would have seen their ships as fodder for the scrap yard. Dan Blanchard of American Safari Cruises saw them as the means to start a new company. With the complete overhaul of two ships formerly of Glacier Bay, InnerSea Discoverieswas born, a small-ship cruise line with a taste for adventure and exploration of wild places. The first time I saw the Wilderness Discoverer she sat high and dry in a shipyard in Seattle. Poin... Read More
Sint Maarten/Saint Martin, two names for one rather small island. This now peaceful Caribbean island has a long and bloody history. Violence began long before the day Columbus first sighted the island in 1493 on November 11, the holy day of Saint Martin of Tours. He claimed the island for Spain, naming it Isla de San Martin. Throughout history, the island changed hands many times between Spain, France, Holland, Britain and... Read More

Castillo San Felipe del Morro Approaching old San Juan by sea, time regresses about 500 years. Weather worn towers (garitas) top the seemingly endless brownish walls dominating the horizon. Looming over the city, the ancient battlements stand guard. The somewhat crumbly appearance deceives the eye, as they seem in fact quite solid. Garita on Castillo San Cristobal, San Juan Puerto Rico San Juan, Pue... Read More
On November 1, 2010, I had the honor of being a co-speaker at the "Night For Autism" gala at the Lemont Restaurant on Mount Washington, a section of Pittsburgh, PA overlooking Downtown Pittsburgh. Here is my speech from the gala: Hello, my name is Robert, and I am one of the 110 people who are diagnosed with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. I don't like to think of ASD as a disorder but something that makes people innovative, special and very interesting! Let me ask you this... Read More

President Obama sets new fuel efficiency Standards Now, i am not real big on government regulations and prefer to let the free market determine what we drive and buy, but i really think without the government setting some mandatory goals in the past, Domestic auto manufactures would be in a much worse situation than they are now. Opec plays games with our economy, raising oil prices by limiting supply. Look at the 4.00 plus per gallon we paid last summer for fuel. The 1,300 co... Read More
Bankruptcy is Economic Stimulus The distraction on Capitol Hill this week has to do with the jackpot bonuses that executives at AIG recently received. The argument is over a relative drop in the bucket. The total amount of bonuses given out was $165 million. The government has put $170 billion into AIG so far. Many now are demanding we get this money back. We ought to be spending our time and effort doing something more worthwhile, like figuring out how... Read More

Advertise In a Recession? Are You Crazy? As it turns out you're crazy not to advertise in a recession. Many studies over the years (even going back to the Great Depression) have shown that investing in marketing during rough economic times is actually more effective than when times are good. This doesn't seem to make sense until you think through the logic. During a recession most businesses decide to cut expenses in order to weather the storm. And one of the first expense... Read More
