THE PITTSBURGH BOTANIC GARDEN

ROYAL WEDDING RECEPTION

April 29, 2011

While 2.4 billion people watched the wedding ceremonies of Prince William of Wales and Katherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey, the hot ticket was the invitation to their reception. Here in Pittsburgh, the hot ticket was also to the Royal Wedding Reception…a benefit for the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden held at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, PA.

Honorary Chairs for the event were The Lord & Lady Palumbo of London and Kentuck Knob…a Frank Lloyd Wright House located near Falling Water. Co-Chairs for the event were Beverlynn & Steve Elliott, Sylvia Dallas & John Oliver, and Bridgett & Brandon Snyder.

A Look a Like Contest was held, and our very own “Kate” was wearing a replica of the wedding gown that was created by Janet Groom, costumer extraordinaire for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Janet looked at the dress on Friday morning, created it during the day (along with 3 colleagues) and our Kate was wearing the wedding gown that evening at the party. A receiving line of Kate, Wills, Harry and the Queen greeted over 350 guests who were heralded by bagpipes, English Trumpets, a Chamber Trio during the reception and a Beatles Look A Like and Sound A Like band who provided music to tap your feet – lots of dancing at this party.

A wedding cake, created by Andrea Schrenk, president of the Pittsburgh Culinary Federation, topped off the dinner menu along with Will's favorite dessert: banana flan.  The women's hats and fascinators looked as though they were straight from London boutiques. Gloves and kilts were also spotted throughout the night.

Proceeds of the event will be used to build the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden located on nearly 500 acres on the Parkway West at Settler's Ridge. By area, the Garden will be one of the largest in the country, will be the only botanic garden built on reclaimed land, and will have the only Fred Rogers Garden of Make Believe. One of the first gardens to be completed is the English Woodlands. The PBG hopes to open the garden in approximately 2 years.
