Women's Health & the Environment Conference

Women's Health & the Environment Conference

Sponsored by Teresa Heinz and the Heinz Endowments in cooperation with Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and facilitated by McMahon & Cardillo at the David L Lawrence Convention Center.

This was another wonderful event highlighting not only the problems of our times relating to environmental issues, but also giving solutions and guidance to make change a reality.  The event was completely free including not only plenty of good coffee,  but breakfast and a box lunch (which was very good).

Featured speakers included many very respected experts in this field of study.  To name a few, Teresa Heinz (chairman of Heinz Endowments), Leslie Davis (president, Magee-Womens Hospital UPMC), Devra Davis PhD (executive director, Center for Environmental Oncology UPMC), Caren Glotfelty (Environment Program Director the Heinz Endowments) to name a few.   Several authors on the subject were also speaking and available for a book signing.

The importance of this event was proven by the attendance.  Approximately 2,000 took time off work or out of their day, to learn about the causes of modern health issues that are a result of modern hazards encountered in daily life.  Teresa Heinz pointed out,  she grew up in a place that good health care was almost impossible to have at any cost,  therefore bad health prevention was the most important issue.   We live in a time where the general thought is that we can fix almost anything that breaks in our body.  This may be true,  but the cost of always fixing is stagering,  and sometimes cancer just can not be fixed.

The general mantra of this event was prevention and healthy choices will result in a much better quality of life for you and your children.  Also pointed out was that the cost of a diesel exhaust filter regulation would lower the cost of health care by almost 10 times that cost (for every $10 spent on the filtration $100 would be saved from health related illness costs). With this filter a truck would exhaust air that was actually cleaner than the air we breath on the average highway.   It was noted that if this filter was supplied as a economic stimulus package, it would put Americans to work building the filter,  and installing it, and also dramatically lower health costs to the nation and employers (more people die each year form diesel particulate issues than car crashes).  Therefore, not making our children ride in soot spewing school buses is now an option.
